Access conditions covering collections vary. While many are open access and may be viewed on request, permission to use other collections must first be sought from donors. A few collections are covered by specific embargo periods. Researchers are advised to contact the Archives before visiting to allow time for access formalities to be completed and for material stored off-site to be brought to the Reading Room.

The University of Melbourne Archives Repository houses the University's collection of nearly fifteen kilometres of records and is one of the largest non-government archives in Australia. The University's own records date from its foundation in 1853 and as well as administrative records, records of student societies and the personal papers of many former academic staff are available for research. The Repository also holds a large collection of business, trade union, and other labour history material.
