Brief description Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating lung disease and is the fifth leading cause of death in Australia. COPD develops only in a fraction of long-term smokers suggesting that genetic factors majorly contribute to disease susceptibility. Importantly, current COPD therapies are incapable of restoring lung function, due in part to our lack of understanding of disease pathogenesis. In this proposal I will develop a new, clinically relevant human model to understand COPD.
