Two works exploring the role of souvenir in jewellery

BACKGROUND Haydon's 'Group of three works exploring the role of souvenir in jewellery' (G3) builds on a body of research that explores the connection between place, cultural history, art and souvenirs, including creative works by jeweller, Robert Smit, and critical literary studies work by Susan Stewart. CONTRIBUTION G3 illustrated new and alternative ways of engaging with the depiction of Antarctica through the concept of the souvenir, photograph and micro mosaic. In addition to the conceptual innovation of re-examining the relationship between jewellery and souvenir, G3 also communicated Hayden's research associated with new and original applications of enamel. SIGNIFICANCE G3 was included in the 2011 Schmuck exhibition. Schmuck is the most prestigious annual international contemporary jewellery exhibition. From more than 650 appliations, Haydon was one of 62 artists selected by independent expert Dr Rudigger Joppien to exhibit works and be part of the field eligible for the Herbert Hoffman award judged by respected experts including Liesbeth den Besten, Amsterdam, Mònica Gaspar, Barcelona/Zurich, Peter Nickl, München and Karl Rothmüller, München. Schmuck 2011 was exhibited at the Internationale Handwerksmesse, Munich. The impact and reputation of this exhibition results in the work being exhibited to thousands of jewellers, curators, students of jewellery and followers of the contemporary field who now travel to Munich from all over the world for what has become the biggest yearly event. Schmuck 2011 then toured to France to Espace Solidor in Cagnes-Sur-Mer. Espace Solidor is one of the only publicly owned galleries in the world dedicated to contemporary jewellery.
