Appointment

The Trustees of the National Gallery were appointed under the provisions of the Public Library National Gallery and Museums Act 1944. The Act dissolved The Trustees of the Public Library Museums and National Gallery of Victoria (VA 912) and appointed four new Body of Trustees for the management of the Public Library of Victoria (VA 913), National Gallery of Victoria (VA 930), National Museums of Victoria (VA 431), as well as the Building Trustees, which were responsible for the management and maintenance of lands, buildings, furniture and fittings owned by the three organisations. The Governor-in-Council was to appoint not less than five and not more than seven persons to be trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria for a term not greater than seven years.

Functions

The trustees controlled the general direction and management of the gallery and were responsible for the establishment and administration of any art schools conducted at or associated with the gallery. This included the National Gallery of Victoria Art School.

All pictures, works of art and exhibits within the gallery and thereafter acquired by the gallery were vested in the trustees and could be loaned by the trustees.

Abolishment

In 1966 the National Gallery of Victoria Act was passed, which constituted a new body called the Council of Trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria (VA 929), to undertake the role and functions previously administered by the trustees.
