Brief description
This record describes data from the first long-term, systematic oceanographic measurements in Spencer Gulf, South Australia. The seasonal variations of temperature and salinity, from both large-scale CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) surveys and time-series observations at a fixed station, reveal the manner in which the gulf responds to seasonal influences. This record describes the time-series information that was obtained from a suite of instruments attached to a permanent beacon in the gulf. Initially the instruments were installed on beacon 5 (-32.7283, 137.818) in 6m of water and operated for ~6 months, from April to late October 1983. They were then immediately re-located to Yarraville Shoal (9m) where they continued their maintenance until mid-1986.Lineage

Statement: 1) Aanderaa weather station recorded wind speed and direction, air temperature, air pressure and relative humidity.
2) Aanderaa thermistor string: 11 sensors at 1-m intervals through the water column, the upper two in air
3) Two Aanderaa RCM4 current meters, recording current speed and direction, temperature, conductivity and pressure. One was attached to the beacon close to the surface, and the other was in a frame, which sat on the bed. In both cases, directional information came not from a fin and gimbal arrangement, but from a small vane assembly, constructed in-house, which was linked to the internal compass by a magnetic clutch at the base of the instrument casing.
4) A tide gauge recorded bottom pressure and temperature.
