Thornton Public School in the County of Northumberland was established on 5 May 1919. (1) A Public School offered primary level courses, and when the Thornton Public School was established a minimum attendance of twenty children was required to maintain a school of this status. From 1957, the minimum number was reduced to nine. In 2004, Thornton Public School was located at Government Road, Thornton in the District of Hunter/Central Coast.
