Brief description Heart attacks are the most frequent single cause of death. It is typically caused by rupture of atherosclerotic plaques and subsequent blockage of the arteries that supply the heart with blood. Advances towards the prevention of heart attacks have been hampered by the lack of an animal model, which we have recently developed and are planning to use to identify factors responsible for heart attacks. We also describe new drugs and nanoparticles that have the potential to prevent heart attacks.
