Brief description

Wistari Reef is a lagoonal platform reef, situated on the Tropic of Capricorn, within the Capricorn and Bunker region of the southern Great Barrier Reef. Remote sensing data (Landsat TM image) and the application ER Mapper 5.5 was used to differentiate Wistari Reef into 5 zones: Surf zone / reef rim, Reef flats, Sanded Reef flats, Lagoon and Leeward Reef Edge. The area of each is determined with the lagoon physiographic zone exhibiting the greatest area, followed by the reef flats.

Lineage

Statement: Single band analysis (1-6) and multiple band analysis was undertaken on a true-colour Landsat TM image of Wistari Reef. ER Mapper 5.5 was used to generate two unsupervised classification layers of the reef. The first involved visible wavelength bands 1, 2 and 3 (blue, green and red), while the second utilised bands (1, 3 and 4) for delineation of regions of coral growth and exposed features. Calculation of areas covered by each physiographic zone was performed within ER Mapper.
Statement: Note that the full extent of the leeward off-reef zone cannot be determined from remote sensing data, due to poor penetration of the water by the available reflected wavelengths. The extent of the region from bathymetric chart gives an approximation of the total area of the shallow off-reef zone. The diagram shows the interpreted physiographic zones for Wistari Reef. Parameters: Physiographic zone, area (km2), % area of reef top (%), image showing interpreted physiographic zones.

Purpose
It was important to distinguish between physiographic zones of the reef, so that additional data collected could be interpreted in consideration of different zonal conditions and characteristics
