Brief description
The distributions at sea of the eight seabird species that breed on Christmas Island were documented during four surveys in the eastern Indian Ocean from 1987 to 1996. These were Common Noddies, Brown Boobies, Red-footed Boobies, Abbott's Boobies, White-tailed Tropicbirds, Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Great Fridgatebirds and Christmas Fridgatebirds.Lineage

Statement: Four surveys of seabirds were conducted aboard the CSIRO oceanographic research vessel Franklin in the eastern Indian Ocean. These surveys were from 2 to 22 October 1987, 1 to 23 April 1995, 21 to 30 March 1996 and 14 August to 4 September 1996. The areas covered at the two times of year (March/April and September/October) are shown in the thumbnail.
Using the protocol of Tasker et al. (1984), all seabirds within a 150-m radius forward of the bridge were identified and counted from the bridge-deck, bridge-wings or the bridge itself, depending upon sea conditions, weather and sun angle. These observation points were 10 m above sea level, providing a visual distance to the horizon of over 12 km (Dunlop et al. 1988). Observations were recorded once when the birds entered the observation area as the vessel moved at 10-12 knots (18-22 km h-1) and three 10-min counts were made during each hour of daylight, following Tasker et al. (1984).
