Brief description
Common Noddies (Anous stolidus) were first recorded on Lancelin Island off south-western Australia in January 1992. A study of the population dynamics of this colony began in the 1994-95 breeding season and was continued for over 10 years, until 2011. The demography of the colony was modelled using information on adult survivorship, age of first breeding and natal recruitment from the analysis of banding-recapture data and annual colony census data.Lineage

Statement: - Banding and census -
In every year since the 1994-95 season, breeding adult Noddies were captured or recaptured on the nest during the incubation-hatching period using a long-handled net. Unmarked individuals were banded with a uniquely numbered, size 06, alloy metal band supplied by the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme. The banding of cohorts of chicks and fledglings began a year later in the 1995-96 season.
The timing of field visits between 1994-95 and 1999-2000 are described in Dunlop and Goldberg (1999) and Dunlop and Mitchell (2001) (see supplementary information). Between 2000-01 and 2003-04 the colony was visited at least five times during the breeding period each season. The field dates were:
for 2000-01: 30 and 31 October, 9 November, 2 December 2000 and 12 January 2001;
for 2001-02: 9-12 November, 26 December and 19 January
for 2002-03: 26 October, 5-7 November, 21 and 27 December, 17 January, 8 February and 8 March
for 2003-04: 31 October, 29 November, 6-7, 20, 28 and 30 December
For more detail of the census methodology see Dunlop and Mitchell (2001) (see supplementary information)
For detail on calculations on Adult survival, Age of first breeding, Minimum survival to recruitment, Net immigration rate see: Dunlop (2005)
