Full description

This dataset was compiled by Dr Richard Tuffin as part of ARC project Landscapes of Production and Punishment (DP170103642). It provides a statistical breakdown of the convict places of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) during the period 1837-54. During this time the convict system underwent a fundamental change as the assignment system was discontinued and the probation implemented in its place. This dataset was compiled to better understand the impact of probation's introduction and provides the backend of GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping that visualises the multiplication of convict places across the colony during this period. This is an active dataset and may be updated as new data is sourced.
This is an active dataset and will updated by the researcher as appropriate. Each version of the dataset has been labelled appropriately for the ease of the user. Further details about this versioning and the dataset itself are available in the attached README file.
