Brief description

A full specification is available for the rain gauge but some important notes to consider are that the RIMCO 7499 is syphon controlled, manufactured to Australian Bureau of Meteorology requirements and is accurate to within 1% for rainfall rates up to 250mm/hr and 3% up to 500mm/hr. A machine-readable description of the site is available using the URL specified for the electronic address of this dataset. The data collected by the rain gauge is transmitted by Ajenti loggers over the 3G mobile network, to the Hydro Tasmania Ajenti Data Management System (ADMS). The logger is powered by solar panels and a rechargeable battery. The voltage of the battery is also available as a time-series. The data is subsequently retrieved via the ADMS using the SOAP protocol and stored in a Postgres PostGIS database where it is made publicly available using a Sensor Observation Service that was created by 52 Degrees North. The rainfall data is detected in 0.2mm increments and is logged every five minutes at which point it is stored as a cumulative value although, the value may be reset to zero during calibration. Recalibration is carried out once a year by Hydro Tasmania personnel. Currently there is no automated Quality Assurance/Quality Correction process in place.
