Created a Borough, 12 November, 1869; Declared a Town, 18 September 1957; Created a City, 12 November, 1989.On 20 January 1995, the Shires of Stawell and Kara Kara and part of the Shires of Wimmera, Dunmunkle and Donald, and the City of Stawell and Town of St Arnaud, united to form the Northern Grampians Shire Council.
