Brief description

Some 150 silk or felt pennants make up this collection and cover presentation pennants for championships, holiday souvenirs and mementoes from naval and commercial ships.

Significance

Rowing, swimming, America's Cup, speedboats and 18' skiffs are some of the areas represented in this collection. Predominantly triangular in shape and made from felt, nylon or silk, these pennants were originally presented to team and individual winners of their respective sports. The collection also includes club pennants from the Surf Life Saving Association and holiday souvenirs from waterfront and lakefront locations around Australia. Pennant souvenirs relating to specific ships cover merchant shipping, cruise ships and naval ships, both Royal Australian Navy and the United States Navy in Australia during WWII.
