Full description

This dataset contains the Hydrology (HYD) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 09/2003. The voyage took place between Cape Leeuwin and the Abrolhos islands off the West Australian coast during October and November 2003. This dataset has been processed and archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the cruise report for this voyage and/or the data processing report . Southern Surveyor on-voyage hydrology data are typically obtained from water samples collected in Niskin bottles at various depths during each CTD cast. Parameters measured normally comprise temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, silicate, and nitrite.

Lineage

Progress Code: onGoing
Maintenance and Update Frequency: asNeeded
Statement: Data source: original field data Data processing and quality control: according to current CMR Data Centre Hydrology data processing manual.
A number of potentially critical problems in this dataset were overcome:
Problem 1
Examination of the data up to station 180 revealed several sets of DO values which were offset from the others by a fairly constant amount. This difference was traced to the flask volume file, where flasks A10 to A17 had impossible values assigned to them. An interim correction was made to the data while at sea. The real volumes of these flasks were re-determined after the voyage and the DO values corrected.
Problem 2
A box of DO samples were labelled incorrectly in the DO software. The problem was rectified by correcting the results for volume, and fixing the temperatures in the .scp file. Examination of the depth plots of the data shows that this correction seems to have worked.
For full details, refer to documentation.
