The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder (PDR), Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. MET data may include atmospheric temperature, humidity and pressure, wind speed and direction, and incident radiation intensity. Data are recorded at 10 second intervals. PDR: The transducer on the Southern surveyor is not the same one as was on the Franklin. Data quality was notably poorer especially in rougher weather and at depth. NAV: The Ashtech OEM gps receiver is far inferior than the GPS which was previously on the Franklin. Overheating was thought to have caused many data dropouts. There were also many spurious values observed in the data.
