South Gippsland Shire Council (South Gippsland II) was constituted in 1994 as part of a statewide program of local government reform enacted between 1993 and 1995. The reform process reduced the number of councils from 210 to 78. The council was appointed as a successor in law for South Gippsland I (Shire 1894-1994) (VA 2511), Korumburra Shire (VA 2452), Mirboo Shire (VA 2471) and Woorayl Shire (VA 2540). Any rights, assets and liabilities of the abolished councils were assumed by South Gippsland II (Shire 1994-ct) as their successor in law.

The Shire covers an area of 3280 sq km and the administrative centre is at Leongatha, 128 km south-east of Melbourne. The Shire includes parts of Bunurong and Gunaikurnai Country.

The Shire’s coastal boundary consists of Venus Bay, Wilson's Promontory and Port Welshpool. Its northern hilly areas include Poowoong and Mirboo North, and the larger towns of Korumburra and Leongatha. The latter are on the South Gippsland Highway, which links them to the towns of Foster and Toora.
