Brief description

Days to emergence, cotyledon width & length, root length and shoot dry weight, emergence success and seed size data for long and short hypocotyl canola varieties in different soil types and soil strengths.
Lineage: Data were produced from experiments using the tube-based phenotyping system developed by Laura Goward, AJE Haddis, Greg Rebetzke and John Kirkegaard in the CSIRO/GRDC projects CSP2212-005RTX and CSP2212-007RTX. The purpose was to simulate field conditions (soil type, soil moisture, bulk density, sowing depth) under highly controlled temperature conditions to test the roles and interactions among seed, soil and environmental factors contributing to seedling emergence. In this project, we conducted two experimental runs focused on the roles of soil type (Geraldton sand; Wagga Wagga loam), soil strength (2.0 kg/cm2 [loose], 3.5 kg/cm2 [intermediate] and 5.0 kg/cm2 [restrictive]), seed size (2.6-3.1mg [small] and 4.8-5.3mg [large]) and hypocotyl length genetics (Reston and SlovenskaKrajova [long hypocotyls], Zircon [short hypocotyls] on seedling emergence success and time to emergence.

In Run1, all factors were included and with three replicates (108 tubes in total). Based on results from Run1, for Run2 we increased replication to nine reps (for loam treatments) or six reps (for sand treatments) and removed variety SlovenskaKrajova and the most restrictive soil strength (5.0 kg/cm2) (120 tubes in total).
