This cruise took place in waters east of Portland, Victoria and in waters off the west, south and east coasts of Tasmania during 15 March - 8 April 1988, under the leadership of Cathy Bulman. Biological data collected on this cruise include catches and catch rates of orange roughy including other fish from demersal and pelagic tows. Biological information on 2078 fish and length frequency by sex on several hundred additional fish. Other samples including 180 gonad samples for histology. 49 whole ovaries for fecundity studies (NSW Fisheries). 94 samples of ovary tissue for genetic studies. 110 liver, heart and muscle tissue samples (University of Tasmania). 90 whole fish for stock discrimination studies (University of NSW). 87 viscera samples (University of Queensland) and 40 swimbladders (N. Elliott, CSIRO). Over 2014 sharks, Centroscymnus crepidater was the most abundant species on the west coast of Tasmania and Deania calcea was most abundant on the east coast of Tasmania. Majority of sharks were length frequencied by sex, and biologicals done on selected adults. Samples of about a dozen juvenile Jackass morwong of the required year class and several boxes of adults. Crustaceans from two pelagic tows. GPS survey data from the St Patricks Head ground to compare with the same ground during the 1987 Soela cruises.
