This cruise took place in southeast Australian waters between Kangaroo Island, South Australia, and Portland, Victoria during 20 January - 11 February 1988, under the leadership of Nick Elliott. Biological data collected on this cruise include depth strata and number of orange roughy from 82 trawls. Orange roughy were caught in 75% of the trawls conducted between the 700 m and 1200 m depth contours with the best returns occurring within the 900 m to 1200 m depths. Other dominant species caught were spiky dory (Neocyttus rhomboidalis), slickheads (Alepocephalus spp.), warty dory (Allocyttus verrucosus), sharks (Deania calcea and Centroscymnus spp.) and eels (Diastabranchus capensis). Orange roughy from three 1200 m to 1400 m depth trawls. Biological information on 1514 orange roughy, and an additional 700 to 800 were measured and sexed. 90 samples of mature ovaries and 100 samples of liver, heart and muscle tissue for stock discrimination analysis by the University of Tasmania. 100 whole fish (>30 cm) from the western end of the survey and 60 from the eastern end, for stock discrimination analysis by the University of NSW. Viscera samples from both ends of the survey area for parasite analyisis by the University of Queensland. 63 gonad samples for histological study at the NSW Fisheries Research Institute. Acoustic data from the trawl survey area. Fish and cephalopod specimens for the Museum of Victoria.
