Brief description

Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet was Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne 1944-1966. In 1960 he (with P. Medawar) was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance. His work influenced the later developments of DNA sequencing.

Sir Frank Macfarlane (Mac) Burnet (1899-1985), medical scientist, was born on 3 September 1899 at Traralgon, Victoria, second of seven children of Frank Burnet, bank manager, and his wife Hadassah, née...
Born at Traralgon Victoria in 1899, Professor Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet was assistant director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute the University of Melbourne 1928-31 and 1934-44, becoming Director and Professor of Experimental Medicine 1944-1965. He was award the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1960, joint, and the Mueller Medal for contributions to science at the 1962 ANZAAS Congress and received various other awards in recognition of his contributions to medicine and science. He died in 1985.
Sir Macfarlane Burnet, Australia's only Nobel Laureate for Medicine, died yesterday at the age of 85 at his son's home in Port Fairy, western Victoria.
