In late winter 2003, early summer 2003, late summer 2004, and mid-winter 2004 water samples were taken for radium isotope analysis which was combined with modelling to determine whether groundwater fate and transport varied with season in the surface waters of Cockburn Sound, Western Australia.Lineage

Statement: - Field Sampling and Laboratory Analysis -
Marine surface water samples for radium analysis were collected from 7 stations inside Cockburn Sound (C4-C9) and 3 outside (C1-3, C10) (see thumbnail). Marine water was pumped from the surface layer (approx. depth 1-2m) at each station and 50 L was collected in plastic drums. All sample containers had been prewashed in Decon 90, acid soaked in 10% HCl for at least 72 hours, rinsed in milliQ deionised water and air dried. Duplicate samples for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NOx and NH4) analysis were collected and immediately stored in the dark on ice, and were delivered the same day to the laboratory where they were frozen until analysis (within 2 weeks).
Water salinity, temperature, DO and pH were measured at each station using a hand-held TPS WP-81 pH-Cond-Salinity meter with a conductivity probe (part number 122201) and a TPS Aqua-D DO meter with a TPS ED1 sensor. Sampling occurred in late winter (September 24, 2003), early summer (December 2, 2003), late summer (March 10, 2004), and mid-winter (July 20, 2004).
On the same day as collection, the 50 L water samples were gravity drained (flow rate = 0.25 L min-1) or weakly pumped (0.4 L min-1) through manganese dioxide (MnO2) columns for radium extraction. Short-lived radium isotopes activities were quantified within a few days by delay coincidence counting (Moore and Arnold 1996).

Statement: The Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSON) is a 3-D dimensional numerical model based on a semi-implicit discretisation of Navier Stokes equations (Backhaus 1985). A localized digital bathymetry was written for Cockburn Sound, and hourly wind forcing was incorporated with quadratic shear stress at the air-water interface.
