Brief description

Ground layer vascular plant species identity and projective foliage cover (PFC) data were collected from four permanently marked 50x10 metre plots in north Queensland on a three monthly frequency for three years. Ten 0.5 square metre quadrats were used for sampling at each occasion at each site and the data pooled and averaged. Refer to Neldner, V.J., Kirkwood, A.B. and Collyer, B.S. (2004). Optimum time for sampling floristic diversity in tropical eucalypt woodlands of northern Queensland. The Rangeland Journal 26: 190-203 for more information.
Note: Spreadsheet compiled in 2021 from original data collection records.

Lineage

Data was collected using the methods specified in Neldner, V.J., Kirkwood, A.B. and Collyer, B.S. (2004). Optimum time for sampling floristic diversity in tropical eucalypt woodlands of northern Queensland. The Rangeland Journal 26: 190-203. Plant nomenclature follows Brown, GK, Bostock PD (2019) Introduction to the Census of the Queensland flora 2019. Queensland department of Environment and Science: Brisbane. https://www.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0028/67447/qld-flora-census.pdf

Data Creation
Repeat field surveys - Four permanently marked sites (500 square metres in area) were sampled at three monthly intervals, and all ground flora species recorded. See Table 1 for more information on locations and description of sites. Ten 0.5 square metre quadrats were used for sampling.
Specimen collection - Plant specimens were collected for identification.

Notes

Credit
This research was supported by the Queensland Herbarium, Queensland Department of Environment and Science.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of time of sampling on the floristic and structural information gathered, and determine the most effective time for sampling vegetation in the monsoonal savannas of northern Queensland.
Data Quality Information

Data Quality Assessment Scope
local : dataset
All sites were sampled using the same methods by the same ecologist V.J. Neldner.

Data Quality Assessment Result
local : Quality Result
Locations were verified by GPS. Sites permanently marked with steel pickets at origin and end point of transect line. Plant specimen identification was verified by the Queensland Herbarium. Results published in Neldner, V.J., Kirkwood, A.B. and Collyer, B.S. (2004). Optimum time for sampling floristic diversity in tropical eucalypt woodlands of northern Queensland. The Rangeland Journal 26: 190-203.
