Richard Samuel lectured in the German Department at Cambridge University from 1934 to 1940 and Durham University in 1937. After war service in the British Army from 1940 to 1945, Samuel worked in the Research Department of the Foreign Office, where much of his work involved translating Nazi documents. In 1947 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Germanic Languages at the University of Melbourne and then Foundation Professor in 1951 until his retirement in 1968. He published many works on German literature. He was a Fellow of the Australian Society of the Humanities and the Australian College of Education and a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
