Brief description
Some 9,000 photographic images, including glass plates, prints and negatives - as well as some related ephemera - comprise the collection from the photographic studio of Samuel J Hood. The collection records an extensive range of maritime activity - mostly on Sydney Harbour - including sail and steam ships, warships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities, from the 1890s through to the 1950s.Notes

The Samuel J Hood photographs are highly competent artistic studies and views. Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism and his maritime photographs are an excellent documentation of life, work and play on Sydney Harbour. Hood's work started with photographing the Sydney shipping trade and waterfront workers. He worked with ship painters to produce views of vessels under sail. Orders for work would be secured from the crew, which included photographs of the ship and crew, and photographs of the final ship painting. Hood is known to have worked with artists Walter Barratt, Reginald Arthur Borstel, George Frederick Gregory, and John Allcot. The museum's collection documents the end of the sailing ship era and the growing dominance of steam vessels.Data time period: 1890 to 1959
