Full description
Sale Gaol was proclaimed in September 1881 according to The Statute of Gaols 1864, although it didn't open until 1887, having sat empty for five years following it's completion. The court house lock-up had previously been proclaimed as the Sale Gaol in October 1864 and this was subsequently revoked once the new Sale Gaol came into operation. The gaol acted as a reception prison for the Gippsland area.In 1972 the gaol was renamed Sale Prison, then renamed Her Majesty's Prison, Sale under the Corrections Act 1986. The prison was closed in April 1997 and prisoners were transferred to Fulham Correctional Centre, a medium security private prison operated by Australasian Correctional Management (now GEO Group Australia) and located near Sale.
