Significance

Sailing and yachting has been a primary sporting and recreational activity in Australia since the mid-1800s. The 18-foot skiff class is a unique type developed on Sydney Harbour in the late 1890s which has a strong social story relating to the sailors and builders, and is recognised internationally for its extreme proportions and high-performance sailing. MISS NYLEX is an example of an Australia yacht winning a major international event through local design innovation with its wind-sail. Australia has had a strong representation in challenging voyages undertaken for adventure, and Kay Cottee was the first woman to complete an unassisted, non-stop circumnavigation in BLACKMORE'S FIRST LADY.
