In the late 1950s, a snow pit was set up on Law Dome to measure the movement of ice below the surface. A large number of pegs were precisely placed in a ice tunnel wall, and regular measurements made to record the distortion over time. A separate grid of poles was placed on the surface, to track surface movement.
