Brief description

Seabird and incidental cetacean and seal sightings were recorded during daylight hours during the moorings deployment at the SOTS site, southwest of Tasmania, March 2017.

Observations were made every ten minutes in the forward quadrant.

There were 1200 observations from 38 species of birds, 3 cetacean species and one seal. The commonest bird species were Puffinus tenuirostris and Pachyptila turtur. Each species has been linked where possible to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS https://www.marinespecies.org). The data has been published to the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS https://obis.org).

Statement: Species identifications were recorded using the bird list called Working List of Australian Birds (WLAB) v.1.3 from Birdlife Australia (http://birdlife.org.au/conservation/science/taxonomy). Cetacean and seal species have been added as required using WoRMS taxa names. The data recording tool allows for ad-hoc names to be added which can be taxonomically resolved post-voyage.
