The Royal Commission On The Provision Of New Government Offices was established in 1858 to enquire (sic) and report upon the best mode of providing offices for the civil service of the Colony, and the most eligible sites for any new buildings that may be necessary for such purchaseThe second report of the Royal Commission, submitted on the 9th of April 1858 established that a General Post Office should be constructed at the corner of Elizabeth and Bourke Streets, and that a competition be established inviting the public to submit design proposals.
This is the last report that was submitted to parliament by the Royal Commission, as no final report was tabled. It seems that the Commission was disbanded late 1858.
