Robert Marsden Hope was born 24 July 1919. He was educated at SCEGS and Sydney University. He was called to the Bar in 1945, and made a Queens Counsel in 1960. He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in September 1969 and held the office until retiring in 1989. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 1972 to 1989, and Acting Judge of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal from 1989 to 1992. He was Chairman of the New South Wales Heritage Council from 1979 to 1993, and President of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties (1).
