Full description

On 16 January 1989, under the terms of the Transport Administration Act 1988 (Act No.109, 1988), the Department of Main Roads and Motor Transport were abolished and amalgamated with the Traffic Authority of New South Wales to form the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales (RTA). (1)

The Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW was responsible for:
· maintaining and improving the State’s road network;
· road safety;
· traffic management;
· maintaining vehicle safety standards;
· licensing drivers, driving instructors and tow truck operators; and
· registering motor vehicles. (2)

From 1 July 2009 when the Ministry of Transport was abolished the Roads and Traffic Authority became a branch of the new Principal Department, the Department of Transport and Infrastructure. (3) The name of this department was changed to Transport NSW from 1 July 2010. (4)

From 4 April 2011 when the name of Transport NSW was changed the Roads and Traffic Authority became a branch of the Department of Transport. (5)
