Rex Mortimer was an Associate Professor in the University of Melbourne's Department of Government and Public Administration in 1979 when he undertook research into the background, influences and beliefs of former members of the Melbourne University Communist Party branch. His research was funded by a small grant from the University of Sydney and he worked with Ken Tolhurst from that University as his advisor.
