Brief description One third of adult cochlear implant (CI) users cannot understand speech without lipreading. We will find out why by measuring the effects on speech understanding of factors to do with pathology in the cochlea, or changes in the brain that occur during periods of deafness, and how these factors interact. Using this knowledge, we will adapt the way that the CI works, or the hearing therapies the person receives, to ensure optimal results.
