This series consists of records pertaining to the building development and redevelopment of various youth and training centres including Turana Youth Training Centre (VA 971), Melbourne Youth Justice Centre (VA 5086), Parkville Youth Residential Centre, Malmsbury Youth Training Centre (VA 3960) and Winlaton Youth Training Centre (VA 5093).The building and planning of the various centres was managed by multiple parties including the Children's Welfare Department (VA 1467) and its successors the Social Welfare Branch (VA 2784), the Social Welfare Department (VA 946), the Department of Welfare Services (VA 613), the Department of Community Services (VA 2633), the Department of Health and Community Services (VA 3092) and the Department of Human Services (VA 3970); as well as the Public Works Department (VA 669) and its successor, the Ministry of Housing and Construction (VA 2907).
Consignment P0001 - Turana Records [1988-1995]
The records include minutes and correspondence, specifications, progress reports, financial status reports, change proposals, testing schedules, technical notes and check lists.
The new complex was spacious in comparison to the facility that it replaced. The carpeted bedrooms each had their own toilet and shower. Each of the four residential units had a kitchen, recreational areas, and a specific room to receive family and friends. The new Centre also had multi-purpose hall, gymnasium and a swimming pool for recreational activities. Special security was provided for the Centre. It included a five metre perimeter wall surrounding the complex to deter escape and a closed circuit television to monitor all access points.
Consignment P0002 - Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre (formally Turana), Parkville and Malmsbury Records [1993-1998]
The records include architectural plans and drawings for multiple youth training centres.
In 1993, the Melbourne Youth Justice Centre opened on the old Turana site. It was later known as the Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre. The records for Turana Youth Training Centre and Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre include floor plans for the various Units, elevations for Unit E and a site plan.
The Parkville Youth Residential Centre, which opened in 1999, became known as the Melbourne Youth Residential Centre. The records for the Parkville Youth Residential Centre are drawings for the Bradman Unit security fence.
The Malmsbury Youth Training Centre later became the Malmsbury Juvenile Justice Centre. The records for Malmsbury Juvenile Justice Centre include site construction drawings, a building set-out and staging plan, floor plans, and elevations.
Consignment P0003 - Winlaton Records [1951-1991]
The records include plans and maps of buildings, grounds and the surrounding area. The earliest record in the consignment is dated January 1951 and is a plan for the conversion of stables into staff quarters.
