Brief description

VICNAMES holds over 45,000 place names and over 200,000 road

names such as mountains, rivers, transport infrastructure, parks, reserves,

forests, bounded localities, roads, streets and lanes.



The Register has the capacity to hold 342 separate feature types and 153

individual road types. Records within VICNAMES may have historical information

attached, there are over 12,000 geographic features and road names that have

historical information associated to them. VICNAMES as Victoria's register of

geographic place names forms part of the national gazetteer which is hosted by

GeoScience Australia and updated yearly. Data from VICNAMES or the National

Gazetter maybe downloaded at any time.
