Brief description
Diatom distributions in the polar regions have been attributed to physical and biological processes. To contribute to an existing diatom database (Pichon et al. 1992), 18 sediment surface samples were taken from the French PACIMA- and Antarctic CRC (South Tasman Rise) cruise missions. These samples were then prepared so that the diatoms could be identified and counted. This dataset provides the raw diatom counts for the 18 surface samples collected.
Lineage
Maintenance and Update Frequency: notPlannedThe method used to clean, concentrate and mount diatom material is detailed in the 'methodology' document uploaded with this record.
Numbers recorded indicate raw counts of a particular species, while '0.1' refers to a fragment/presence of a particular species not included in the total counts for the sample.
Parameters: Diatom species, LKA code, core code and core coordinates (degree, decimal minutes), depth from which the sample was collected (m), number of each species counted in the sample.

This experiment was part of a larger study, the aim of which was to provide a considerably modernised interpretation of the southeast Indian Ocean sector during the late Quaternary.
