Brief description

The purpose of this experiment was to quantitatively examine the rapid colour changes associated with the fiddler crab, Uca capricornis. Experiments were conducted in the East Point Reserve, Darwin from Nov - Jan (04/05 and 05/06). 65 randomly selected crabs were caught (21 males and 44 females) and their ability to change colour over a 20 minute period was assessed using a portable spectrophotometer. The results indicate that when caught, or otherwise stressed, U. capricornis are capable of rapidly changing their colour, with short term colour changes more likely in females. In all cases the pattern remained unchanged, but did become more difficult to distinguish as the colours darkened.

Lineage

Statement: Spectral reflectance of various areas on crab carapace was measured relative to a white 'Spectralon' standard with a USB2000 UV-VIS portable spectrophotometer (Ocean Optics Inc. Dunedin, FL, USA). Measurements were taken of the same areas 5, 10 and 20 minutes after the initial measurements. After each set of measurements a digital photograph was taken. Between measurements, the crabs were kept in the shade in a clear plastic cup with 1cm of seawater.
Statement: The first measurements were taken as soon as possible after capture, and further measurements were taken of the same areas 5, 10 and 20 minutes after the initial measurements. The spectral reflectance measurements are given in the excel worksheets provided. Each worksheet has several crabs (denoted by crab number) which has the date and crab details in the first column. Then a set of 4 columns correpond to the reflectance of a particular area at 0, 5, 10 and 20 minutes. It also tells you the colour of each area (yellow, blue, white etc). Cells A13 onwards are the wavelengths at which the reflectance was measured. Some of the crabs don't have measurements for all time periods. Parameters: Crab number, date, time after capture (minutes), sex of crab, carapace width (mm), claw length (mm), claw side (left / right), colour of each area, wavelengths at which the reflectance was measured and reflectance values.
