Ronald Giovanelli was Chief of the Division of Physics, CSIRO from 1958-1976. He was interested in both optical measurements and solar astronomy.

Born 30 April 1915. Died 27 January 1984. Educated University of Sydney (BSc (hons) 1937, MSc 1939, DSc 1950). Research Fellow, Mount Stromlo Observatory 1937-39, National Physics Laboratory, London 1940-41, CSIR/O National Standards Laboratory 1941-58, Chief, Division of Physics, CSIRO 1958-76. Chairman, Australian National Committee, International Quiet Sun Years 1962-65, President, Astronomical Society of Australia 1968-71, President, Commission 12 (Solar Radiation), International Astronomical Union 1973-76, Chairman, Australian National Committee for Solar-Terrestrial Physics 1973, 1979-81. Edgeworth David Medal, Royal Society of New South Wales 1949, Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1962.
