Quirindi Public School in county Buckland was established in August 1877. Public Schools are basic elementary schools in the New South Wales education system. When the School commenced an attendance of twenty-five children was required to establish a public school. This figure was reduced to twenty children in 1880 and nine in 1957.
In September 1891 the School was converted into a Superior Public School. Superior Public Schools were those officially recognised as providing both primary and post-primary education. From 1913 Superior Public Schools were reorganised, and restricted to offering two-year vocational courses-commercial, home science or junior technical. An individual school could provide one or more of these, but smaller Superior Public Schools, generally in the country(possibly including Quirindi) offered a modified composite course.
In October 1917 the school reverted to its former status as a Public School continuing until September 1920 when again it was re-classified to a Superior Public School.
From January 1925 until December 1942, Quirindi was designated a District Rural School. District Rural Schools emerged to provide pre vocational education for country children. Three year post-primary courses were offered, including agriculture, applied farm mechanics and rural economics for boys, and home science and horticulture for girls. From 1926 agricultural, commercial, home science and technical courses were made available, with the Intermediate Certificate adopted as the final examination.
In January 1943 the Quirindi school became an Intermediate High School. Intermediate High Schools emerged to cater for children qualified for, but unable to enrol in, the State’s small number of High Schools. Intermediate High Schools offered academic instruction to Intermediate Certificate level.
From January 1954, Quirindi became a Public School again. In 2004 it was located at Munro Street, Quirindi, in the district of New England (1).
