Pyrenees Shire was constituted in 1994 as part of a statewide program of local government reform enacted between 1993 and 1995. The reform process reduced the number of councils from 210 to 78. This council has been appointed as a successor in law for all or part of the Shire of Ripon (VA 2496), Shire of Lexton (VA 2457) and Shire of Avoca II (VA 536) (Victoria Government Gazette S 63, 23 September 1994). Any rights, assets and liabilities of the abolished councils have been assumed by Pyrenees Shire as its their successor in law.
