Professor Katharine (Kate) Steinbeck is an endocrinologist and adolescent medicine physician. She is the inaugural Medical Foundation Chair in Adolescent Medicine at the University of Sydney, which is Australia’s first University Chair in Adolescent Medicine established in 2010 in recognition of the need for a focused effort to address the health problems faced by adolescents including the large burden of chronic illness. Trained in endocrinology, Professor Steinbeck developed a dual career pathway that included adolescent medicine and has extensive experience in managing adolescents and young adults with disorders of puberty and chronic conditions including diabetes and obesity, and long term endocrine effects in childhood cancer survivors. She leads a research team to address gaps in evidence in the field, and is working to integrate research and teaching, to promote youth health issues and educate and support doctors who treat young people. She actively advocates for youth by engaging with teacher groups, NGOs, professional organisations and the media. She notes, “adolescence is a challenging specialty area in medicine, which doesn’t fit neatly into paediatrics and child health, or adult medicine. It is a time when health trajectories are established for life, but where medical needs are poorly understood. Adolescents’ propensity for risk behaviours against a background of a still-developing brain, demands that we develop better ways of creating safe environments while supporting emerging autonomy”. Professor Steinbeck’s research has made major contributions to clinical practice and policy. She is Member of the Research Committee of the American Society of Adolescent Medicine, Co-Chair of the Lifespan Theme at the University of Sydney, Member of the National Youth Information Advisory Group (AIHW), and Chair of the RACP Specialist Advisory Committee for Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.
