Full description
Port Welshpool Primary School (School No. 3375) (VA 3870) was a co-educational primary school located in South Gippsland. The school first opened in 1900 as Port Welshpool State School. It was run out of a rented building until 1915, when a new site was established for the school North of the town. A building from another town was moved onto the site to house the 30 students enrolled. This building was burned down, however, in 1934 and schooling was moved to the nearby public hall. Another building was subsequently brought to the site and used for the next 25 years. It was replaced in 1957 by a new prefabricated school on a new site near the township, on the corner of Stewart and Dobson Streets.
In 1970, there was a statewide decision to change the use of the term ‘State School’ to refer to all primary, secondary and technical schools instead of just primary schools, and for all primary schools to use ‘Primary School’ in the name. Accordingly, the school name was changed to Port Welshpool Primary School.
Enrolment numbers declined and at the end of 1993, Port Welshpool Primary School was closed and merged with Welshpool Primary School (School No. 3011) to form the new Welshpool and District Primary School (School No. 5396). The new school took over the former Welshpool Primary
school site, and the Port Welshpool school building was demolished to make way for a private residence.
