Collection of data relating to 378 non-war memorials from across Australia.
Research methodology
Local researchers were recruited to provide an inventory and details of non-war memorials in their area. Details collected included the history and use of each memorial, along with a photograph. All details were entered into a FileMaker Pro database and later published as a publicly accessible online directory via the Australian Centre for Public History website.
In total, 378 memorials were surveyed. The research team devised thematic categories for the memorials:
- Natural disaster
- Civil disaster
- Sudden death
- Migrant community
- Indigenous community
- Individual community role
- Community role
- Violation
- Lost places (Time)
- Lost places (State)
- Animals
- Personal memorials
- Disease
- Other
Available data
In digital form:
- FileMaker Pro database containing records for each of the 378 memorials
- .JPEG images for each memorial
- Online directory via the Australian Centre for Public History website
In non-digital form:
Individual paper files exist for each memorial. These files include the source materials for the history and use details entered into the FileMaker Pro database. This includes:
- Paper inventory form completed by local researchers for each memorial
- Other materials – can include newspaper clippings, memorabilia and other ephemera depending on the memorial.
