Brief description
Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were collected monthly along two cross shelf transects (CH-Line, B-Line) and one intermediate coastal station (SS) off Coffs Harbour (~30°S, 153°E), Eastern Australia, between May 2011 and September 2012. The exact sampling locations (coordinates) and times were recorded. Two of the sampling stations (CH3 and CH5) are also the sites of permanent IMOS moorings (CH070 and CH100, respectively). Two files are provided, one containing detailed data on phytoplankton (genus or species level where possible) and grouped zooplankton (copepods, larvae, ciliates), while the other reports on ciliate abundances (incl. tintinnids) only.Lineage

Statement: Water samples from fixed depths were collected in 5L Niskin bottles (General Oceanics, USA) while surface samples were collected in a 10 L plastic bucket. Sampling was undertaken from aboard RV Circe (provided by the National Marine Science Centre, Coffs Harbour) or RV Bombora (Office of Environment and Heritage vessel). Subsamples of 2 L were immediately preserved by adding 6 mL Lugol's acid solution and returned to the laboratory for further analysis. The 2 L samples were concentrated via sedimentation (48 hrs) before phytoplankton identification and enumeration followed under an inverted microscope (Leica DMI300b) at a magnification of 200 x using the Utermoehl method (Utermoehl, 1958) . A minimum of 400 cells were counted per sample, the lowest size limit at which phytoplankton could be distinguished was 10 µm. A Calcofluor White Stain solution was added to the sample at least 30 min prior to counting, at a final concentration of 20 µg mL-1, to facilitate the identification of thecate dinoflagellates. Zooplankton (copepods, larvae and ciliates) were also counted and total abundances were recorded (without further taxonomic discrimination).
September 2017
To provide a more detailed overview about ciliate (including tintinnid) composition and abundance, ciliate data was separately re-analysed. Total abundances of ciliates (incl. tintinnids) were extracted from the original data by L. Armbrecht and identified by R. Pierce based on photographs. This data is provided in file “Ciliates_incl_tintinnids_LA_RP_2017”. For tintinnids, families as per Kofoid & Campbell, 1929, were used. For non-tintinnids, families as per Agatha, 2011, were used. Ciliate taxa information is provided in an attached file (Richard Pierce).
A new version of the full dataset has been generated, which in addition includes a correction relating to the bottom depth for station B4 in July 2011 which was given as 75 m, but it should have been 53 m.
