Prisoners, whose prison sentence was longer than six months, were photographed at the start and end of their imprisonment. The practice of taking photographs of prisoners commenced circa 1872. Photographs were in addition to the detailed physical descriptions entered in the register and served as an aid to identify the prisoner in case of escape, for example.Only prisoners at Pentridge and Melbourne Gaol were photographed.
Photograghs of prisoners also appear in some units of VPRS 515 Male Prisoner Register.
