Brief description

This is a small collection of stamps and First Day Covers that primarily relate to maritime subjects. It is neither comprehensive nor complete.

Significance

The philately collection comprises some sixty First Day Covers relating to Antarctic discovery and research and a number of maritime events relating to Australia's maritime heritage. These include the 1987 America's Cup, the 75th anniversary of the HMAS SYDNEY / SMS EMDEN battle of 1914, HMB ENDEAVOUR's botanist Daniel Solander, the 1994 Sydney-Hobart yacht race, and the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea. There is also a selection of stamps from 1960-2000 relating to the Olympic sports. The collection includes postcards, certificates and envelopes which, while they have stamps afixed, were not collected for their philatelic value but for their image or content.
