Credit
We thank the National Facility Steering Committee ORV for the opportunity to undertake this cruise. Special thanks are also due to Australian Army Transport for logistic assistance, to CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre for providing a Darwin Base where our equipment was assembled before the cruise, and to RAN divers from HMAS Cairns who recovered samples whose passage to Canada had been unintentionally interrupted by a return to the marine environment in Cairns Harbour. We again enjoyed the benefit of an unpublished SeaBeam bathymetric chart of the eastern Manus Basin, provided by Professor Hitoshi Sakai of Yamagata University, Japan from the 1991 Aquarius cruise. Also of considerable importance to the success of our cruise were the results of five Shinkai-6500 dives undertaken at PACMANUS during the 1995 ManusFlux cruise, which was conducted within the Japan-France New Starmer Program and also as project 95ESC15J under the Japan-Australia Science and Technology Agreement. Travel and logistic expenses of PACMANUS-III were supported by the following. In Australia: CSIRO and the PACMANUS-PLUS consortium of mineral exploration companies, Australian Research Council, and CODES at the University of Tasmania. In Canada: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Bank of Nova Scotia, and the University of Toronto. In USA: Hawaii Underwater Research Laboratories. The Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea provided Stan Nekitel as the PNG participant and generally helped with information and PNG approvals of the expedition.
