How to Use This Series

Correspondence within letter books is arranged in chronological order by the date of writing. Indexes are included in the volumes from 1886.

Function/Content

Letter books were the means by which copies of correspondence dispatched from the office were retained for future reference.

System of Arrangement and Control

Outward letter books formed an integral part of official municipal correspondence systems until well into the twentieth century. When letter books were in use inward correspondence was filed separately from the replies. The Inward Correspondence Files for the same period have been registered as VPRS 9548.

In 1928 subject filing of inwards and copies of outwards correspondence was introduced (see VPRS 9549).
