The Shire of Oakleigh was constituted on 23 November 1871, after the Oakleigh and Mulgrave Road District [VA 4846] was divided into electoral subdivisions by an Order dated 8 May 1865 and named the Shire of Oakleigh.Later, by an Order published in the Victorian Government Gazette on 19 February 1897 the shire changed its name to the Shire of Mulgrave [VA 4848].
